1. Submit your website to the search engines

The first thing you should do is to submit your website to all the major search engines.  This lets them know that you are out there with a brand new website or blog and they should start visiting and indexing your pages.  Here is a good place to start Submit to Google - Submit to Yahoo - Submit to MSN

2. Networking on Social Sites

Just like in the real world, networking with colleagues can be done online on social networking sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Plaxo.  Begin promoting yourself and your company in a positive way without too much emphasis on a sales approach to your product or service.  Sales pitches on these sites will turn people off to you and you will lose credibility.

Take the time to setup your profile correctly with all the information you can add to it.  Use a good photo, as people like to see a face with a name and start a group around your product offering, with the intent to educate people in some way about what you do.

3. Forums

Posting in forums gets your words out there and in front of a very targeted audience.  It’s a great way to easily engage people with topics that important to you and your business.  Use forums to solicit opinions and expect to get them.  People who are active forum posters will be happy to provide their opinions or advice on your topics.

The second ad aired last week and was about Bill and Jerry trying to connect with normal folks.  It was funnier than the first one but still the question on everybody’s mind was the same “How are those ads going to make me want to buy a pc or upgrade to vista?”

The short, answer is by “viral marketing“.

Microsoft’s approach isn’t to advertise a specific product or a service because such an ad would be forgotten the same day.  Their “Bill and Jerry Adventures” is a series of episodes which are funny, incite conversation and makes us curious about what’s next.  They are creating a buzz in the blogs and forums, as people tell each other how they love them or even hate them.

The ads will not make you want to run out and buy Vista but they are a good attempt in re-shaping the Microsoft image.  They portray Bill Gates as a regular guy.  Granted, with very little acting skills, but nevertheless a side of him we have never seen before, and that is something to talk about.

Is this plan working…?  The last ad has been viewed over a million times on YouTube.

We’ll see if Microsoft’s ads will help them achieve a positive likable branding in the long run.
But for now, are they successful?

It is important to notice of the anchor text with the incoming link.  Most of the time you have no control over this because it is up to the other website to write proper anchor text.  However, if you can influence this, ask them to use text such as ‘your product, your industry, city, state, or your service’ rather than your company name.  This put your link in context and help you rank higher for your industry, service, product or city.  You will probably already rank well for your company name, so there is no need to use it here.
